Tottenham Hotspur claimed a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with an own goal from Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders and a late strike from Mathys Tel settling the contest.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso was forced into two changes before kick-off, with Emi Martinez and Joao Pedro both ruled out through injury. Penders came in for Martinez between the posts, while Geovany Quenda replaced Joao Pedro.

The opening half was largely even, played through heavy rain. Chelsea created the better early chances, with Cole Palmer firing narrowly wide from an acute angle and Jordan Henderson spurning a good opportunity from inside the Tottenham penalty area. Antonin Kinsky produced a string of saves to keep the scores level, denying Palmer, Henderson and Pedro Neto before the interval.

Tottenham broke the deadlock with 13 minutes remaining. A corner into the Chelsea box saw Jan Paul van Hecke apply pressure on Penders, and the ball struck the goalkeeper's hand before deflecting into the net, with Maxence Lacroix unable to clear.

Chelsea's task was made considerably harder three minutes later when Palmer collected a second yellow card for a foul on Conor Gallagher and was dismissed. Tel then wrapped up the victory in the closing stages, running onto the ball and finishing to make it 2-0.

Chelsea, who sit fourth in the Premier League table with 13 points from eight matches, next face Liverpool in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
