McGinn says Villa were punished in 3-0 loss to Barcelona

Aston Villa were beaten 3-0 by Barcelona at Camp Nou on Tuesday night. Lamine Yamal opened the scoring early, and Raphinha's second-half brace sealed the win for Hansi Flick's side.

Villa showed promise in the first half, but captain John McGinn said they could have taken better advantage of the chances they created after falling behind. He admitted they were punished by the better side.

McGinn said: “You come to places like this, you need to start the game well, you need to weather the storm. We didn’t do that tonight.” He added: “Tonight, Barcelona made the right decisions at the right times and scored really good goals.”

Villa have 12 points from nine matches this season and sit 10th in the table. McGinn insisted the club can still compete with Europe's elite, saying: “We’ve come a long way, we’ve shown we can compete with teams at this level, but our final pass tonight when we got in good positions let us down.”
