Luke Webb, a former Arsenal academy graduate and son of ex-Manchester United and England midfielder Neil Webb, has built a school coaching career after a professional playing career cut short by injury in his early twenties.
Now 40, Webb oversees a coaching programme that has developed approximately 280 players across British boarding schools, with seven going on to become professionals in various leagues.
"I went down the school route as a coach selfishly because I knew I'd be able to convey my own vision on the coaching setup," Webb said. "What they have in common is that they are making the world a better place from their experience in football."
Webb was part of the first cohort to train full-time at Hale End after Arsenal sold Nicolas Anelka and began construction of new training facilities. He later left the club at 19 to join Championship side Coventry City, before moving on to Hereford United.
His time at Arsenal overlapped with the Invincibles era, and he trained alongside Cesc Fabregas after the Spaniard arrived from Barcelona's La Masia in 2003. Webb credits Fabregas's understanding of space as a direct influence on his own coaching philosophy, which he calls "the language of space".
"Cesc was amazing, a lovely guy, and his understanding of space was at such a level I'd never seen before," Webb said. "I've since developed a concept which I call 'the language of space', where I teach footballers from school level to signing for Premier League clubs at 18."
In August, Webb joined Rossall School in Lancashire. He has also created the HUDL Independent Schools' League and authored three coaching and mentorship books. His programme has seen players sign professional Premier League contracts at 18 without prior academy experience.
"In an ideal world, I'd love the establishments of high-level school sport and the academy system in the UK to join forces for the benefit of developing young players," Webb said.
