Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi has explained why he replaced goalscorer Archie Gray at half-time in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, pointing to a first-half yellow card.
Gray was booked after 15 minutes, just minutes after Jean-Philippe Mateta was sent off for a rash challenge on Micky van de Ven. Ten minutes later, the versatile defender broke the deadlock, heading home Mo Kudus' deep corner from the far post.
De Zerbi said he did not want to take a risk with Gray on a yellow card, with his side in full control against ten men. Pedro Porro came on in his place, also getting important minutes after returning from injury.
Asked whether the change was due to injury or tactics, De Zerbi said: "No, the yellow card. I didn't want to take a risk for another yellow card. I'm sorry, because he was playing very well. I explained why I took the decision, but I think it was the right decision in that moment."
De Zerbi also praised Gray's recent form. "He's improving a lot. After Manchester United, he's playing very, very well, as a mature player - also the team."
Tottenham, eighth in the Premier League with 12 points from nine matches, have won three of their last five league games. Crystal Palace are 18th.
