Alonso: Rogers was Chelsea's number one summer target

Morgan Rogers has made an immediate impression at Chelsea since joining from Aston Villa, and manager Xabi Alonso says the 24-year-old's quick adaptation has validated the club's decision to make him their top transfer priority this summer.

Rogers completed his move to Stamford Bridge after helping England to a third-place finish at the World Cup, but did not begin training with his new team-mates until 11 August following a period of rest. His only pre-season action came in a friendly against Real Sociedad, in which he scored.

Despite limited preparation, Rogers showed no sign of rustiness on his Premier League debut at Craven Cottage, scoring a first-half goal as Chelsea won 3-2 against Fulham. The following weekend he provided an assist for Pedro Neto in a home fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge.

"Probably yes, because it's been just three weeks since he started playing for Chelsea, started training with us and getting his fitness level, but he has had a very good impact," Alonso said when asked whether Rogers' form had surprised him.

"I hoped he would have a straight impact on the team and that he would get along with his team-mates so well, because he knew many of them. That's why he was such an important target and a goal for us to get him, and once we got him in the building, he fulfilled our expectations."

Alonso was unequivocal about Rogers' status in Chelsea's summer planning. "He was the number one target for us," the Spaniard said. "Talking about squad planning, taking big decisions, for sure, Morgan was a big one as we get a player of his stature in the present and for the future."

"He will be a key player for the next six, seven years. Right now, he has had a great impact and his chemistry with the whole team is great, and the chemistry with his strike partners is fantastic. That's happening in such a short time. It gives us a lot of hope for the future – and he looks really happy as well, which is important."

Rogers' arrival was part of a broader squad overhaul at Chelsea following Alonso's appointment as manager ahead of the 2026/27 season. The England international faces a further test on Sunday when Chelsea travel across London to face Arsenal.
