Xabi Alonso says Chelsea are well placed to manage without Reece James, with Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill among those set to captain the side.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso says his squad is well equipped to handle the absence of captain Reece James, who is sidelined after minor knee surgery.

Alonso pointed to Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill as the players most likely to wear the armband in the weeks ahead, with Colwill having captained the side in the most recent fixture against Bournemouth.

The Chelsea head coach stressed, however, that formal captaincy is secondary to a broader culture of leadership throughout the group. "You can be a captain without the armband," Alonso said. "Once you wear it, you have to be proud and take that responsibility. We have Moi, we have Levi, we have players that take that responsibility and perform the role in a perfect way."

Alonso also emphasised the importance of leaders influencing their teammates across the full working week, not just on matchdays. "They need to pull from the rest, not just on matchday, even during the week, they need to deal with that," he said.

The Spaniard highlighted the varied personalities within his squad as a collective strength. "Levi is different from Reece, Moi is different, Cole, Hendo, Emi, each one is different," Alonso said. "That's why it's so important for me to have a good mix of personalities, of qualities, of stages of their career so that they can help."

Alonso concluded that the diversity of experience and character across the dressing room leaves Chelsea well positioned to navigate James's recovery period.
